The 2010 Census will be a snapshot of our nation’s population – capturing our changing and diverse America in a fleeting moment in time. But this historic event will do more than tell us who we are as a nation today. It will affect Your community’s future. Your country’s future. Your future.

The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States, as required by the U.S. Constitution to occur every 10 years. In March of 2010, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided.

The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for things like hospitals, schools, emergency services, and job training centers. Census data are also used by states, local governments, developers, and retailers (to name a few) to make key business and investment decisions.

The 2010 population count also determines the number of seats North Carolina has in the U.S. House of Representatives. The more people who are counted in an area, the more representation they will get in the House.

The 2010 Census form is just 10 questions, including name, sex, age, date of birth, and race. The census DOES NOT ask about the legal status of respondents or their Social Security numbers. Any personal data you provide is protected under federal law.

By participating in the census and being counted, you can help create a better future for you, your community, and those important to you.

If you don’t fill out the form and mail it back, a Census worker comes knocking on your door – up to six times until they find you. For every percentage point that we are able to increase the response rate of those who fill out the form and mail it back, we save the federal government and taxpayers $90 million.
