On the heels of Cabarrus County banning all tobacco products from parks earlier this month, the Town of Harrisburg would like to remind residents that our parks have been smoke-free for nearly a decade.

Town Ordinance 97.06 was approved by Town Council on Oct. 14, 2002 and states: "It shall be unlawful for any person to use any tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, or snuff) in the park."

Penalties are noted in Ordinance 97.99, also passed in 2002: "Violation of any provision of this subchapter which also constitutes a violation of the criminal or motor vehicle laws of the state or the town shall be punishable as provided in such other law or ordinance. Violation of any other provision of this subchapter shall constitute a misdemeanor and shall be punishable by a (fine) of not more than $50 or imprisonment not exceeding 30 days, or both."

For more information about the Town of Harrisburg's smoke-free policy, contact Town Hall at 704-455-5614.

To learn more about Cabarrus County's tobacco ban, click here and read a press release regarding the change, which went into effect July 1. County officials note the new policy aims "to protect public health and the environment. This tobacco ban will free parks of harmful second-hand smoke as well as exposure to discarded cigarettes and other tobacco products which children and pets may find on the ground."
